Each year, the university conducts entrance examinations for admission to various academic programs and formulates admission policy in accordance with UGC guidelines and central government rules regarding reservation of seats for different departments. According to the university, separate merit lists are prepared for candidates of general class, scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, other backward class, economically weaker section and PWD class and also for foreign nationals for each research program of the university.
“Admission of foreign students for PhD program is considered as per UGC 201 Reg regulations. Research scholars can be supervised by faculty members. Foreign students are only offered PhD admission if there are vacancies in any branch after proposing to Indian candidates. Was, ”the statement said.
The National Testing Agency conducts computer-based testing (CBT) for admission to its academic programs. It said JNU’s schools and special centers conduct viva tests where applicable.
The final selection of candidates for admission in various research programs is made on the basis of their performance in CBT and viva voce (where prescribed) based on the merit of the candidates in their respective departments.
Notably, PhD admission to JNU is based on the 2016 University Grants Commission’s gazette notification and the number of seats in each department is determined and announced in advance in the prospectus.
The number of PhD seats is based on the vacancies available with each faculty member and the research resources available. The university said JNU has no authority to create a large number of PhD positions, while a large number of positions are possible in non-PhD programs.
“According to the university’s admissions policy, JNU allocates a maximum of five percent of the armed forces personnel’s widows / wards for admission to the university program while working / at work or in peacetime.”
“Most of these seats are for UG / PG / part-time programs, but not for B.Tech, M.Sc (Biotechnology), M.Sc (Computational and Integrative Sciences), MBA and Ph.D programs,” the varsity said.
