FedS urges schools to provide Covid-19 shots, information for children – Times of India

WASHINGTON: The Biden administration is encouraging local school districts to host clinics to vaccinate children against the Covid-19 vaccine – and parents’ information about the benefits of shots – because the White House wants to provide a quick vaccine to 5- to 11-year-olds.

First Lady Jill Biden and Surgeon General. Vivek Murthy will visit Franklin Sherman Elementary School in McLean, Virginia on Monday to launch a nationwide campaign to vaccinate children. In 1954 the school provided the first polio vaccine.

The visit comes just days after federal regulators recommended the Covid-19 vaccine for the age group. The White House says Biden will visit child immunization clinics across the country in the coming weeks to encourage shots. At the same time, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Besser and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona are sending a letter to school districts across the country urging them to organize vaccine clinics for their newly eligible students. Officials are reminding school districts that they could tap billions of dollars in federal coronavirus relief money to support pediatric vaccination efforts.

The Biden administration is providing equipment to local school districts to help schools manage shots with pharmacies. And it is asking schools to share information about the benefits of the vaccine and details of the vaccination process with parents, in an effort to combat the misinformation surrounding the shots.

The White House is encouraging schools to host community conversations and share fact sheets on vaccines, and is working with the American Academy of Pediatrics to partner with local physicians to share science-based information about shots.

About 28 million children between the ages of 5 and 11 are now newly eligible for shots for the age at which the Pfizer vaccine has been approved. The White House says the federal government has collected enough two-dose vaccines for all of them.

A Pfizer study on 2,268 children found that the vaccine was about 91% effective in preventing the notable Covid-19 infection. The Food and Drug Administration studied 3,100 shots of vaccinated children and concluded that the shots were safe.

Although children are less likely to have severe Covid-19 than adults, they are infected with the Delta variant and are just as easily infected as adults, “said Dr. Anthony Fawcett, the government’s top infectious disease specialist, in a recent White Paper. House briefing.

Since the onset of the coronavirus epidemic, at least 94 children between the ages of 5 and 11 have died from covid-19, more than 8,300 have been hospitalized and more than 5,000 have developed a serious inflammatory condition associated with the virus.
