Excluding students from weaker classes can create digital divisions: VP – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday warned that issues related to access, quality and affordability could be linked to the Kovid-1 pandemic epidemic and could exclude many students in the process and called for an inclusive approach to online and distance learning.

Describing the power of online learning as a “digital bridge” for people in remote areas, he stressed that students should not be excluded from the socio-economically weaker class and create a “digital divide”.

To improve Internet access and capability, especially in rural areas, Naidu stressed the need for speedy implementation of projects like Bharat Net. The vice president wants organizations that conduct corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities to prioritize the supply of electronic devices to socially and economically disadvantaged school and college students, a state statement said.


Naidu also noted the lack of online courses in Indian languages ​​and called on private players in the educational technology sector to provide content in more regional languages.

In this context, he recalled the tool invented by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) which recently translated English content into 11 Indian languages ​​and called for more such efforts.

Naidu stressed that “online education should not be kept as a privilege of a few, but should become the ultimate tool for real democratization of education in India.”


Officially referring to the first founding anniversary celebrations of Andhra Pradesh Central University Anantapuram here from his official residence, the Vice-President noted how higher education can be a major economic catalyst for the community, improve a region and even boost the country.

Noting the positive externality of higher education, Naidu called for further “internationalization” of Indian universities.

He cited the example of top global universities that attract international talent each year and prosper as centers of excellence, providing economic benefits to the host country.


To achieve the internationalization of universities, Naidu emphasized the need to actively collaborate with renowned global universities as well as promote diversity among faculty and students.

He suggested encouraging Indian universities to open global campuses, which would also enhance the brand value of Indian education.

Naidu also wanted universities to engage and work with the local population by utilizing their expertise.
