New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Monday asked the Center to suspend the counseling of NEET-PG until it determines the validity of the decision to preserve OBCs and EWS in the Centre’s All India Quota (AIQ).
The apex court said counseling would not start without approval as the court was investigating the appeal against the Centre’s decision for medical admission.
Last week, the apex court asked the Center whether it wanted to reconsider the annual income limit of Rs eight lakh set for determining the Economically Weak Division (EWS) category for reservation in NEET admissions in medical courses.
The Supreme Court made it clear that it was not entering the policy domain but was merely trying to verify whether it complied with the principles of the Constitution.

On October 7, the apex court questioned the Center over its decision to fix the annual revenue at Rs eight lakh for the EWS department for reservation for NEET admissions.
The Center then said that setting an annual income limit of Rs 8 lakh for the EWS category was a matter of policy based on the National Cost of Living Index.
On September 1, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the students’ appeal against the July 2 notice, reserving 227 per cent for OBCs and 15 per cent for EWS and 15 per cent for PG All India quota seats. (MBBS / BDS and MD / MS / MDS) effective from the current academic year 2021-22.
