Entrance test required for admission to Central University from 2022 – Times of India

The admission process in most central universities will change from the coming academic year as the Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) will be applicable for admission in all undergraduate courses at various central universities across the country. The Union Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC) have informed the central universities about the compulsory entrance test from next academic year, after which all the central universities have started preparations for CET. Delhi University (DU) has made CET compulsory for the academic year 2022-23.

These central universities have passed CET proposals in their respective Academic and Executive Councils.

According to eminent academician CS Kandapal, this is a new system and its effectiveness can be tested on the basis of experience. It would not be right to comment on the merits and demerits of the new system as it is now. Educational institutions must see this as a positive change, he added.

Entrance exams can open new doors for students. If there are errors in the system or in the behavior or in the future testing process, there is always room for improvement, Kandapal said.

According to Hansraj Sumon, a professor at DU, the number 12 in the name of CUCET will not be completely neglected. Many central universities have approved CUCET in their Academic Council but the results of Class 12 board exams will also be taken into consideration.

The Union Ministry of Education says there has been a demand for CUCET to be implemented for a long time, but now it has been implemented.

Hansraj Sumon, a former member of the DU Academic Council, said that due to the Kovid-19 epidemic, the process of grading marks in Class 12 board exams was misused by several schools which presented students with exaggerated performance.

The DU professor is also in favor of complete reform of the admission process in his varsity. However, he said that while doing so, the interests of marginalized and economically weaker sections of students should be kept in mind.

According to Sumon, the way the CET is being introduced will increase the importance of coaching centers, which may leave economically weaker students behind.

He said that for admission in DU from next academic year, students have to pass CET with good marks.

Other central universities are following the same admission policy. This means that from the next academic year 2022-23, admission to other central universities including DU, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Benares Hindu University is possible only through CET.

Under the current admission system, merit lists are compiled on the basis of the marks obtained in the Class XII examinations in most of the universities. Students fill up the respective university forms on different dates for admission. Unable to get admission in the university of their choice, the students go to the universities and colleges where the seats are vacant.

The UGC said the CET would be administered by the National Testing Agency from the 2022-23 academic year.
