Dilip Ghosh ‘manhandled’: 8 arrested, Bengal govt tells EC | India News – Times of India

New Delhi: Eight people have been arrested in connection with the alleged attack on Dilip Ghosh and an FIR has been lodged, the West Bengal government said in a statement to the Election Commission.
BJP Ghosh was allegedly beaten during the Bhabanipur by-election campaign in Kolkata on Monday.
Earlier, after the incident, the police had filed a self-motivated case against the unidentified persons under the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code at Bhabanipur police station.
Reacting to the incident, BJP leader and Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav said the arrest proved that Ghosh had been attacked.
Shortly after the incident, Ghosh said, “There is no point in holding elections if we do not reach out to the voters. People are living in constant fear. If an MP is attacked, I do not think a common man will come out to vote. A neutral election can be conducted.” No, the election should be canceled.
Ghosh blamed TMC workers for the incident. The ruling grassroots, however, said the whole episode was “staged” to get attention before the by-vote.
TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee is contesting the by-election for the post of Chief Minister of West Bengal after losing the May 2021 assembly elections from Nandigram. The BJP has fielded Priyanka Tibrewal against Banerjee.
Shobhandev Chattopadhyay of TMC won the Bhabanipur seat, but resigned to pave the way for Mamata.
The by-election is scheduled for September 5, and the votes will be counted in October.
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday dismissed the plea to postpone the by-elections.
