Defence minister conducts final breakthrough blast of Sela tunnel in Arunachal | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh virtually conducted the final groundbreaking blast of the Sela tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh and on Thursday unfurled the flag of the BRO’s 20,000-km-long motorcycle expedition.
Virtual groundbreaking explosions and flag hoisting were conducted by the Minister at the National War Memorial.
The Sela tunnel will be the largest two-lane tunnel in the world at an altitude of more than 13,000 feet, Singh said. He appreciated the work done by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) while conducting this project.
He said the tunnel would not only strengthen national security, but also increase transport facilities for the local people and consequently improve their socio-economic status.
“This tunnel, which has been built with sophisticated features, will prove to be the lifeline of the entire Arunachal Pradesh, not Tawang,” Singh said.
The tunnel passes through the Sela Pass and is expected to reduce the distance to the Chinese border by 10 km through Tawang district in Arunachal Pradesh. Construction of the tunnel is expected to be completed by June 2022.
“The groundbreaking explosion of the Sela main tunnel shows your (BRO) hard work and your commitment to the country’s security and socio-economic development,” the defense minister said.
He also flagged off a BRO motorcycle expedition.
Singh said 75 BRO and Army personnel would take part in the motorcycle expedition which would cover a distance of 20,000 km through many states and union territories.
The Sela tunnel will reduce travel time by at least one hour between the headquarters of four army corporations in Tezpur, Assam, and Tawang.
Moreover, it will ensure that National Highway 13, especially the 171-kilometer stretch between Bomdila and Tawang, is accessible in all weathers.
In the 2018-19 budget, former Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced plans to build a tunnel through the 13,700-foot Sela Pass, which would ensure rapid movement of troops in the strategically located Tawang district. On the border with China.
