NEW DELHI: After a few days wave of daily Covid-19 cases, several cities and states on Friday reported a decline in new infections. Delhi’s daily numbers are down 15% compared to yesterday’s while Mumbai’s numbers are down 17%. The number of daily cases has also come down slightly in West Bengal and Gujarat.

India has added 265 Omicron cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the number to 5,753

Among the major states, the number of daily cases in Gujarat has decreased by 10% and in West Bengal by 3%. There were 43,211 new cases in Maharashtra, which is about 7% less than yesterday’s figures. It killed 19 people and made 238 more Omicron cases, bringing the number to 1,605.
Meanwhile, Kerala grew by 21%, Tamil Nadu by 12% and Karnataka by 15%.
The daily positivity rate in West Bengal was 31.14%, in Tamil Nadu 15.6% and in Kerala 23.7%.

Among the major cities, Delhi and Mumbai registered a decline while Kolkata and Chennai increased slightly on a daily basis. The daily number in Bangalore has increased by 9.5%. Although the incidence in Delhi has decreased, its daily positivity rate has increased to 30.64%; It killed 34 more people in 24 hours.

In the last 24 hours ending at 9 am on Friday, 2,64,202 new Covid-19 cases were reported in India, an increase of 6.7% over the previous day. This is the highest one-day spike in 239 days. With 1,09,345 recoveries, active cases are now at 12,72,073, where the daily positivity rate has risen to 14.78%.

The country reported 315 deaths in 24 hours, bringing the total to 4,85,350.

India’s Covid-19 vaccine coverage has crossed 155.92 crore (1,55,92,20,012), the health ministry said on Friday. According to the bulletin, 49 lakh (49,33,612) vaccines have been given till 6 pm.
More than 3.7 million (37,50,755) precautionary doses have been administered so far for the category identified as beneficiaries for covid vaccination, with 3.8 million given on Friday alone.
Vaccination in the 15-18 age group is also going fast as they got more than 8.58 lakh in their first dose on Friday. A total of 3.23 crore beneficiaries of age group have been given jobs.

Doctors say India is providing additional tests and medicines

A team of 35 eminent doctors from across the country and abroad issued an open letter on Friday stating that the third covid wave running in India, like the previous two, was characterized by unreasonable tests, drugs and hospitalizations.
They appealed to the central and state health authorities to stop these “unwanted” practices and to promote evidence-based medicine.
Dr. Sanjay Nagral of Jaslok Hospital, one of the signatories, said: This letter is an attempt by some physicians to explain that we do not agree with some of the practices. ”

No need to examine asymptomatic contacts: Center

The government on Friday reiterated that Kovid patients do not need to be tested for asymptomatic contact. It also states that people recovering from covid need to be re-examined after seven days of home isolation, unless they have recorded a fever in the last three days.

On Friday, the health ministry also denied reports of a shortage of the covid vaccine in Maharashtra. The state has more than 2.4 million unused doses of covacin and received an additional 6.35 million doses on Friday, the ministry clarified.
