Cotton University launches open UG, PG course for Kovid orphans under special quota – Times of India

Guwahati: Cotton University (CU) announced on Tuesday that it will admit undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students who have lost their parents in Covid-19.

Although admissions to leading state universities almost ended in October, a notification issued by CU Academic Registrar SK Dutta said such students would be admitted under a special provision.

Although the number of applicants for the CU Covid-19 quota is not certain, the notification said that for UG and PG first semester admissions 2021-22 for a few seats, applications will be invited on ordinary paper with a deadline of 15 November.

“The application must be accompanied by a medical certificate stating the cause of death of one of the parents of the candidate is Covid-19 infection,” read the notice.

Dutt said the best students would be selected from the quota application.

In UG and PG, about 1,200 seats have been filled recently but additional curriculum activities and some more seats are being filled under the reserved quota. A total of six seats in UG course, three seats each in BA and BSc will be filled in Kovid-19 quota. Dutt said they have not yet decided on the number of PG seats.

In the second wave, Chief Minister Himanta Bishwa Sharma launched a special scheme in Kovid to provide Rs 2.5 lakh for women who have lost their husbands. But there was no policy in support of the students.

“When we are offering admissions under different quotas in extra-curricular departments, why aren’t some seats reserved for students who have lost their parents due to the epidemic? We can proudly say that this is a unique initiative of our university, ”said Dutt, crediting CEO VC, Bhavesh Chandra Goswami for adding the new quota.

“Applicants who have lost their parents in 2020 and 2021 are eligible for this quota,” the university said in an earlier statement. These quotas will not apply to self-financed UG programs and BA in Liberal Arts.
