Congress’s ‘Chalta Hai’ Attitude Behind Losses: Meghalaya’s Mukul Sangma

Mukul Sangma and 11 other Congress MLAs have joined the Trinamool.

New Delhi:

Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told NDTV on Thursday why he and 11 other MLAs had joined the Trinamool Congress, as the Congress was heading for an electoral battle without a drive to win.

“We (Congress) are not going to win the election battle. It is the ‘chalta hai’ attitude that we are going with,” said Dr Sangma, explaining why the party lost the last state election. He said Congress has been weakened in several states and there is no credible plan for revival.

“Unfortunately, there are many more senior leaders who have tried to talk to the senior leadership of the Congress, but to no avail … It is not that Dr. Mukul Sangma did not try. [with the Congress leadership]Dr Sangma said he wanted to know if he had tried to discuss the issue with the party leadership before going to the grassroots.

The former chief minister said that electoral strategist Prashant Kishore had approached him to join the grassroots. Both sides discussed multiple points and it was a “long drawn out job”.

“We did a little bit of research on our own … and saw if it was possible to line up with anyone. Then he (the Pacific teenager) suggested … that you have to see this particular place (grassroots). It is available,” said Dr. Sangma said.

The demand comes at a time when a spin-off of the Congress led by Trinamool – Mamata Banerjee – has taken Mukul Sangma and 11 other Congress MLAs in a massive coup for the ruling party in north-east West Bengal.

Meghalaya legislators submitted a letter to Assembly Speaker Metbah Lindoh around 10pm on Wednesday, informing him of the change in their status, sources said.

The development, which made the Trinamool Congress the main opposition party in the state, came a day after Congress leaders Kirti Azad and Ashok Tanwar, as well as former Pawan Verma of the Janata Dal (United), joined the Trinamool Congress in Delhi. Party chief Mamata Banerjee is currently touring the national capital.
