Chinese Army Hands Over Missing Arunachal Teen To Indian Army: Minister

PLA hands over Arunachal Pradesh teenager Miram Taran to Indian Army

New Delhi:

A teenager from Arunachal Pradesh who went missing along the Line of Actual Control with China has been handed over to the Indian Army, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted today.

“The Chinese PLA has handed over Mr. Miram Taran, a young man from Arunachal Pradesh, to the Indian Army. Appropriate procedures, including medical examination, are being followed,” Mr Rijiju tweeted.

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army, or PLA, had earlier confirmed that Mr Tarn would be deported to India. Bad weather in the mountains delayed his return.

On January 25, Mr. Rijiju tweeted that some people had stated that the Chinese PLA had taken Mr. Tarn into their custody.

On Tuesday, the minister said the boy’s safe return was a priority and called on people to be careful about making statements about him.

The teenager went missing from an area near the LAC and the Indian Army immediately contacted the Chinese side on January 19, asking for help in locating and returning the teenager if the PLA took him into their custody.

An eyewitness, Johnny Ewing, who accompanied Mr. Tarn that day, said, “I went with Maryam to hunt in the Siangla area but we could not proceed because of the darkness. Suddenly the Chinese PLA came and took Maryam captive. They chased me but I fled the area. I was able to go. I reported the abduction to the nearest Indian Army checkpost. The next day, I returned to Tutting and informed Maryam’s family members and the Indian Army camp at Tutting. “

The upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh shares an international border with China. People from Arunachal Pradesh often go to the hinterland for hunting.

The news agency Reuters reported that China had claimed that the teenager had entered Chinese territory “illegally”. Colonel Long Shaohua, commander of China’s Western Theater, said in a statement posted on his official WeChat account that the man “entered Chinese territory illegally and was subsequently interrogated, segregated and monitored in accordance with relevant border control regulations and provided humanitarian assistance.” PLA’s Western Theater.
