NEW DELHI: A slogfest has erupted over Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s remarks that freedom fighter and saffron icon Bir Savarkar had appealed to the British for mercy at the behest of Mahatma Gandhi and the BJP had come out with documents to support his party leader’s statement and chanted slogans against opposition leaders. The claim is “wrong and unstable”.

Here is a letter written to Savarkar’s brother. ”
As social media was flooded with various views, Savarkar’s biographer Vikram Sampath came forward in support of Singh and referred to “the collected works of Mahatma Gandhi”. He wrote, “I hope you do not say that the Gandhi Ashram did these letters for doctorate. You can’t eat more than that. ”
BJP’s IT chief Amit Malviya tweeted documents including Gandhi’s writings in “Young India”. “The talent of Savarkar Brothers should be used for the welfare of the people. Either way, India is in danger of losing her two faithful sons if she does not wake up on time. I know one of my brothers very well. I had the pleasure of meeting him in London. He is brave. Describing Savarkar as a staunch nationalist and India’s first military strategist in the twentieth century, Rajnath said on Tuesday that he had written a mercy petition to the British at the request of Mahatma Gandhi and that people of Marxist and Leninist ideologies had wrongly accused him of being a fascist.
