The event was to be held at the Senate Historical Senate Hall of the Faculty of Historical Arts and all preparations were completed. However, at a time when almost all the participating poets were present and there were also guests, including many department heads, deans and administrative officials, an announcement was made that the event was being canceled. Although the university administration cited ‘unavoidable circumstances’ as the reason for canceling the event, people close to the AU administration told TOI that it was done after the chief guest and vice-chancellor withdrew from attending the event because some of the invited poets were in the Shahinbagh Citizenship Amendment Act last year. (CAA) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The issue has been circulating through social media since Friday morning, which could be the main reason for the absence of key guests and may eventually cancel the event,” said a senior faculty member at AU.
Social media posts have even claimed that the event was canceled due to the intervention of the UP Chief Minister’s Office.
AU authorities, however, have denied all such claims. AU’s public relations officer Jaya Kapoor said in a press statement on Saturday, “The proposed poets’ conference and mushaira held at the Senate Hall on Friday have been canceled. The event was providing logical support to the Urdu Academy and the AU and its Urdu Department and Culture Committee, but some of the names on the panel of invitees were without approval.
“The VC had nothing to do with the details of the event. He was invited to chair the session after the ceremony was held at the Senate Hall of the University. The event was canceled due to unavoidable circumstances. There is no veracity of media reports that the event was canceled on the instructions or intervention of the Chief Minister’s Office or the Union Ministry.
