New Delhi:

An army officer and four militants were killed in clashes between security forces and militants during an anti-militant operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Punch district on Monday.

The raid was carried out at a village near Dera Ki Gali in Surankot in the early hours of the morning on the basis of intelligence information about the presence of terrorists.

The terrorists in hiding opened fire on the search parties, resulting in heavy gunfights and seriously injuring a junior commissioned officer or JCO and four other soldiers. They died from their injuries.

Encounters with the terrorists were ongoing and more details were awaited, a defense spokesman said.

Officials said there were reports of a group of armed terrorists in the Chamera forest after they were able to snatch from across the Line of Control (LoC).

The area has been tightened to plug all the escape routes for the terrorists, they said.
