Nanda Kumar Baghel is out of jail this evening after three days in jail (File)

A Raipur court today granted bail to Nanda Kumar Baghel, father of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who was arrested earlier this week on charges of making offensive remarks against the Brahmin community.

Nanda Kumar Baghel did not seek bail when he was arrested on Tuesday and the court remanded him in judicial custody for 15 days. His lawyer Gajendra Sonkar later applied for bail and an emergency hearing.

“After hearing the argument, Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) father Kumar Hidco granted him bail today,” Mr Sonkar said.

After spending three days in jail, Nanda Kumar Baghel came out of jail this evening.

Mr. Bag Baghel was arrested on the basis of a case filed in September by the Sarva Brahmin Samaj.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel strongly condemned his father’s alleged statement and said that no one is above the law.

Nanda Kumar Baghel was charged under the Indian Penal Code for “promoting animosity between different groups”.

According to the complainant, Nanda Kumar Baghel asked the people to “boycott” and evict the Brahmins. The remarks were made during an event in Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The Chhattisgarh chief minister said the remarks hurt the feelings of a community and he was “hurt by them too”.
