In Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh anti-terror squad asked people to share any information about Siddiqui and another accused, Mohammad Umar Gautam. Protesters in Aligarh handed over a memorandum to the President to a senior AMU official.
In the memorandum, they said the arrest of some Muslim clerics for alleged illegal proselytizing and “harassment and eviction of Muslims in Assam on the issue of citizenship are creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity in the minds of Muslims”.
The memorandum added, “Such sorcery by minorities will pose a threat to the peace and stability of the country.”
Siddiqui was arrested three months after the ATS arrested Mufti Kazi Jahangir Alam Kasmi and Gautam, residents of Jamia Nagar, Delhi.
According to officials, Kasmi and Gautam were running the Islami Dawah Center, an organization funded by the ISI to convert deaf-mute students to Islam.
ATS has so far arrested 11 people, including Siddiqui, in connection with the conversion case.
The arrested have been charged under the relevant sections of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibited Religion Illegal Conversion Act, 2020 and the Indian Penal Code, officials said.
Any information about Siddiqui and Gautam’s associates, family members, movable and immovable assets, etc. can be shared on mobile number 9792103156 and email id firstname.lastname@example.org, a senior senior police official said on Friday.
“Following the court order, ATS on Friday took Siddiqui into police custody for 10 days. We have released a mobile number and an email ID so that people can share any information about Siddiqui and Gautam,” he said.
