Amrita University to offer M.Tech in Defense Technology – Times of India

Kolam: Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeeth, a leading multi-disciplinary educational and research institution, has an M.A. in Defense Technology. All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The course is now being developed and offered at the university to cater to the growing skill demand of India’s fast-growing defense sector.

The University applies for admission from undergraduate engineering students in the 2021-22 academic year. Since Defense Technology is a multi-disciplinary domain, students from a wide range of engineering streams, from chemical engineering to computer science, can apply. M. Tech. The Defense Technology course is designed to create post graduates who will have the necessary theoretical and experimental knowledge, skills and qualifications for various defense systems and contemporary technology to run R&D. The program will be based on class lectures and original thesis work. During the program, students will be given the opportunity to work on their core thesis in the DRDO Lab, Defense PSU and the personal defense industry.


According to the university statement, India’s defense sector is expanding rapidly and the central government is currently focusing on defense-nationalization of the country, which is currently the world’s third largest importer of arms and defense equipment, self-sufficient. Therefore, the domestic defense market is bright and there are efforts to recruit defense industry in both public and private sectors. A special program like the current one is expected to create a huge pool of talented workforce for the defense sector and complement the startup ecosystem in the defense sector. Introducing M.Tech in Defense Technology, DRDO Chairman G Satyesh Reddy said there is an urgent need to expand the research base to develop advanced technology and accelerate India’s technology self-reliance in defense. “Amrita is working with DRDO on a lot of advanced technology – especially in defense R&D,” he said.

P Venkat Rangan, Vice-Chancellor, Amrita University, said their vision was to contribute to nation building by providing quality higher education in the areas of strategic importance in engineering, medicine, education and social sciences.
