alam: Madrassa pupils look beyond life as clerics | India News – Times of India

Mufti Fayyaz Alam is a Qazi or a judge of the Shariah Court in Nagpara, run by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB). Since he completed his religious education from the famous Madrasa Darul Uloom Deoband (UP) in 2006, Alam has been looking for opportunities to enroll in a graduate course at a government recognized university.
As his investigation came to an end last week, Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikhled NGO helped him join a BA course at Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMU).
Alam is one of the products of 50 madrasas, most of which work as low paid imams in mosques or madrasa teachers who are enrolled in YCMOU for undergraduate courses. They are now in the mainstream education system and their employability will increase in the postgraduate, open job market.
“Even if I don’t join another profession, there is always an advantage in getting more qualifications. It will help me to be more confident. Armed with a bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution, I can better face the world, “said Alam, who is interested in pursuing a doctorate. “Why do madrasas see product life only as imams or preachers? Why can’t they be trained to increase their employment and live comfortably? …, ”said Sheikh.
