96% of school, 92% of students participate in National Achievement Survey – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Nearly 96 per cent schools and 92 per cent students in 24 states participated in the National Achievement Survey (NAS) conducted across the country on Friday, according to preliminary estimates shared by the Ministry of Education.

“The National Achievement Survey 2021 has been successfully conducted across the country, with enthusiastic participation of schools and students. So far, according to preliminary estimates from 24 states and union territories, about 96 per cent schools and 92 per cent targeted sample children have participated in the survey,” said a senior ministry official.

The survey was conducted through a variety of instruction available in the sampled schools. This survey is conducted every three years to assess the skills developed by the students at the third, fifth and eighth grade levels. The survey was last conducted in 2017 and was scheduled to be held in 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 situation, it was postponed until this year.

“NAS 2021 is the first achievement survey since the publication of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP). The assessment will be used against students’ learning standards as opposed to criteria such as process skills and learning outcomes. NAS 2021 will affect the skills-based assessment system. The official said.

“In addition to student achievement tests, student questionnaires, teacher questionnaires and school questionnaires were also obtained to understand the different settings and perspectives of students, teachers and schools. It will provide valuable information on background, teacher training, rural-urban, efficacy. To fully understand the system, ”the official added.

Although the NCERT carried out instrument development, testing, finalization of test items, sampling of schools, etc., the actual administration of tests in the sampled schools was carried out by the CBSE in collaboration with the concerned States and Union Territories.

The survey, which covers public, government-aided and private schools, will help assess learning barriers and new learning during epidemics and take remedial action.

“The epidemic forced the closure of schools and disrupted education at various levels. There is an urgent need to assess the progress and learning skills of children in order to analyze and examine the health of the district, state and education sector to take necessary measures.

“It is essential to measure the education system before and after the lockdown to assess the impact of school closure on students’ inclinations.

NAS results will be prepared in the form of District Report Card, State and UT Report and National Report.

“NAS will enable States and Union Territories to identify gaps in learning outcomes and take remedial action. It will also help build the capacity of teachers and staff involved in providing education in the country. It further increases, ”the official said.
