At least 66 medical college students in Dharwad, Karnataka, who have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, have tested positive for Covid-19, officials said today.
Students at the SDM College of Medical Sciences were found to be infected after testing covid in 300 out of 400 students after an event at the college.
Two hostels of the college have been sealed as a precautionary measure on the instructions of the district health officer and the deputy commissioner. Physical classes have been suspended at the moment, officials said.
Dharwad Deputy Commissioner Nitesh Patil said the infected students, who had been vaccinated with both doses of the covid vaccine, had been isolated and would be treated inside the hostel.
“The remaining 100 students will be tested for COVID-19. We have quarantined the students. We have sealed the two hostels. The students will be provided medical treatment and food. No one will be allowed to leave the hostel. Will be quarantined, “said Mr Patil.
It is suspected that the students became infected after attending a recent college event.
“We are checking to see if the students have dropped out of the college. What we suspect at the moment is that an event was organized for the students in the college. We have examined all the students who took part in the event. All students have been vaccinated with both doses, ”the official said.
Some infected students have coughs and fevers but others currently have no symptoms, he said.
