The Pune State School Education Department will introduce a single textbook formula from 2022-23 to reduce the weight of school bags for 1st class students every day. Later this arrangement will be implemented for all primary classes.

The four subjects taught in Std 1 ইংরেজি English, Marathi, Mathematics and Play and Learn একটি are combined into one textbook per semester. Instead of carrying the textbooks of each subject separately, a student should carry only the integrated textbooks per semester, whether it is part 1, 2, 3 or 4 according to the semester.

“At the moment, a Std 1 student, about 6 years old, carries at least 830gm of textbooks in his bag. Add to this the weight of a water bottle, tiffin and notebook and the weight exceeds 1kg. But in this method, the weight of the textbook is 210gm. On an experimental basis, books have been introduced in 488 model schools, and the response has been good, “said Vivek Gosavi, director of Balbharati (State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research). Gosavi says that from the 2022-23 academic year, the integrated bilingual textbook will be introduced for first graders across the state. “Then it will be done for second class and many more. We will incorporate the changes according to the new education policy, whenever it is implemented. We have received excellent feedback from teachers using this textbook. Students also like integrated activities,” he added. .


Rekha Varpalliwar, a school teacher at the district council of Chandrapur district, said it was a great initiative, especially for children in remote areas, where schools are far away and students have to walk long distances with heavy bags. “The weight of the bag has been reduced. The activities mentioned in the book are also very helpful,” he added.

Manjiri Khambe, a school teacher from another district council in Raigarh, said every part of the book has a theme. “The first part is ‘me and my family’, then the water, the animals and finally, the fourth part is transportation and the people who help us. Currently, we are teaching the second part. It is written so that the students can do everything on their own. The focus is on arousing curiosity in them so that they become lifelong students, “he said.
